Daniel E. Murphy, AIF®

New Bern Office

Dan was born and raised in Laurel, Maryland, and is a graduate of Auburn University. Upon graduation, Dan joined the sales and marketing division of Service Corporation International, working in Mobile, Alabama, and then in Raleigh, North Carolina. During that time, Dan won several annual achievement awards.

In 1997, Dan joined American Express Financial Advisors, which later became Ameriprise Financial. It was here that he met Joe Matza. Dan and Joe formed their initial partnership in 1998.

Though Dan may be the youngest member of our team, he is actually the longest-tenured advisor at our firm, with more than 20 years of solid experience as a financial advisor. He holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary®designation, which signifies specialized knowledge of fiduciary responsibility—particularly as it applies to 401(k)s and other retirement plans.

Dan and his wife Ashley live in New Bern, North Carolina. They have been married for more than 17 years, and they have three children: Danny (14), Parker (12), and Rheagan (10). Dan enjoyed coaching his kids' baseball, basketball, and soccer teams when they were young.  He now enjoys watching as others coach them in tennis and golf.   Dan also enjoys (and Ashley puts up with) his love for Auburn football. They enjoy their date nights and spending time traveling as a family.

Dan is a commissioner for the Town of Trent Woods and serves as a board member of the Fireman’s Local Relief Fund for the West of New Bern Volunteer Fire Department. He is a past board member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, serving on the finance committee, and was a youth leader of Garber United Methodist Church for many years. Currently, much of Dan and Ashley's free time is spent doing family activities, where their photography hobby has shifted to many pictures of the kids! They attend Garber United Methodist Church.

Joseph D. Matza, CFP®, CFS®

Raleigh Office

Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation, Joe served for five years as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his time in the service, Joe spent eight years working in mid- and senior-level management positions with two different Fortune 500 companies: American Express and Dun and Bradstreet.

In 1997, Joe joined American Express Financial Advisors, which later became Ameriprise Financial. It was there that he met Dan Murphy. Joe and Dan formed their initial partnership in 1998.

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and Certified Fund Specialist® with more than 20 years of experience as a financial advisor, Joe won't say that he's seen it all, but he knows he's seen some of the best and worst times that the markets can send his way. He believes those experiences have taught him invaluable lessons that make him a better advisor today than he has ever been.

Joe and his wife Mary have been married for more than 30 years.  They live in Cary, NC and have a second home at Emerald Isle, NC.  Joe and Mary enjoy traveling, hiking, reading, watching Carolina Hurricanes hockey, and spending time at the beach with family and friends!  Joe is also a part-time employee of the NHL as an off-ice official so you just might see him at the PNC Arena in the penalty box or running the game clock.  Joe and Mary attend Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, where he serves as chairman of the Parish Finance Council. He and Mary are also active in several of the programs that minister to the homeless of the Raleigh area.

Paul W. Eyre

New Bern Office

Paul was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Growing up in a military family, he spent several years in Europe and Asia before eventually settling in Long Beach, California, where he spent his teenage years. Paul attended Kent State University and subsequently went to work in the construction industry as an upper-level manager. Paul managed major projects from coast to coast, eventually ending up in North Carolina in 1992.

In 1998, Paul joined American Express Financial Advisors, which later became Ameriprise Financial. It was there that he met Dan Murphy and Joe Matza.

Calm and cool is a good way to describe Paul. With 18 years of experience as a financial advisor, Paul has worked with and guided his clients through some of the most extreme ups and downs the financial markets have ever seen.

Paul and his wife Vicki live in New Bern, North Carolina. They have been married since 1990. They have two daughters, Megan and Nicole. Paul's passion and love for professional and collegiate sports have no boundaries as he is an avid USC Trojans football, St. Louis Rams, and Boston Red Sox fan.

Paul and his family attend Brice's Creek Bible Church, where Paul is the chairman of elders. His wife and daughters are involved with the youth ministry, Vacation Bible School, and the annual Christmas nativity drive-thru. Paul is also the president of Business Watch in New Bern, working with local police and sheriff departments, and is involved with groups preparing high school students for college by helping them understand financial concepts and finance. In their free time, Paul and his family enjoy boating and spending time on the beach. Their daughters participate in various sports and music activities.

Jay Barish, CFP®, JD, MBA

Raleigh Office

Jay was born and raised in a suburb of Denver, Colorado. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Chicago, and his JD and MBA are from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a former attorney who also consulted on systems design and business process engineering. Jay brings a lawyer's orientation and a practical outlook to his clients' financial pursuits and has been through booms, busts, and recoveries as an advisor.

Acting on a 20-year-long interest in personal financial planning, he joined American Express Financial Advisors, which later became Ameriprise Financial, in 2002. In 2005, he became independent and has enjoyed his association with Joe since then. He’s a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and feels that being part of a team at Murphy Matza Wealth Management and utilizing the outstanding resources of Commonwealth Financial Network® is the best possible situation for his clients.

Jay and his wife Jody have been married for almost 20 years. They enjoy the constant development of their four kids, Peyton, Jordan, Mason, and Keaton. Jay has coached kids' soccer and basketball, is the starter for their summer swim team, and is himself an avid basketball player and fitness weight lifter. He's a voracious reader of both classic and modern literature, loves films, and enjoys a huge variety of music.

Linda Clark

Client Services Manager, Raleigh Office

Linda was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in nearby Ramsey, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in international relations/Russian. After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles, where she worked for many years as an applications engineer for Berthold, a German typesetting equipment company.

Linda moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband Don in 1981. Together, they ran a successful graphics business for many years while raising their three children. After the children had grown, Linda transitioned to the securities industry as an administrative assistant and is now a client services manager. She began working with Joe and Dan in 2000 and has been delighting her advisors and our clients ever since.

Linda and Don have three children. Their son Matthew, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. He and his wife Alla live in Pensacola, FL. Their second son, Tony, a graduate of East Carolina University, is an IT Recruiting Manager for Kelly Services.  Their daughter Dana graduated UNC Wilmington and is a Physicians Assistant with Atlantic Vein and Vascular in Virginia Beach.

Linda enjoys reading, music, and traveling to Antigua in the summer with her mother, Mary. She is active with her Pi Beta Phi sorority alumni club. She and Don have been married for 35 years, and they are members of the St. Andrew the Apostle Church parish in Apex, North Carolina.

Elevia Hearne

Client Services Manager, New Bern Office

Elevia joined the team in 2005 and is a fully licensed securities representative. Prior to joining Dan and Paul in the New Bern office, she worked with BB&T in its Investment department and briefly with the New Bern Chamber of Commerce as the membership director before returning to investments.

Elevia is instrumental in setting the tone for the New Bern office. She ensures that clients have an extraordinary experience by providing them with excellent customer service and a listening ear—part of the reason we have strong relationships with our clients.

Elevia is a native of North Carolina, growing up in the eastern part of the state. Always ready to lend a hand, she has served as an officer for the nonprofit boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Tryon Civitan, and, most recently, Coastal Women’s Shelter. She and her husband Jimmy live in New Bern and are very active with their church family at Cherry Point Church of Christ. When they get some free time, they enjoy catching fish and shrimp and sharing them with friends and family.

Jody Barish

Client Services Manager, Raleigh Office

Jody was raised in Butler, Pennsylvania, and is the youngest of five daughters. She graduated from Grove City College with a BS in management engineering and received her MS in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon. During her 13-year career with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Pittsburgh, she held management positions in work management, information services, and clinical program development.

Jody and Jay decided to relocate to Cary, North Carolina, to raise a family, and Jody switched to domestic engineering and extensive volunteering at church and school. Several years ago, she became Jay's administrative assistant, and they have still remained happily married! Jody appreciates excellent customer service and does her utmost to always provide it to our clients with a smile and a “can-do” attitude.

Jody is always awestruck by her fast-growing children—three boys and one girl—and their many interests. Jody enjoys running (three half marathons under her belt), swimming, cooking and baking (especially cheesecakes), reading, and scrapbooking.

Rebecca Watrous

Administrative Assistant, New Bern office

Rebecca was born in New Haven, Connecticut, where she lived briefly before relocating with her family to New Bern, North Carolina, in 2000. Rebecca attended Pamlico County High School, where she graduated with honors in 2014. Currently, Rebecca attends Craven Community College and plans to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to attain her bachelor's in business marketing. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, being anywhere near the water, and reading.

While going to school part-time, Rebecca also balances working part-time at a popular local restaurant. Her dedicated, hardworking demeanor complements our New Bern office well, as we strive to deliver excellent client service. Rebecca has been a valuable member of our team since 2015.
